When England took the pitch to face Italy on Tuesday night viewers took to Twitter to comment as sports fans often do. What made Tuesday’s match different was that the bulk of the commentary focused on the ink of Ryan Mason, an up-and-coming midfielder who plays his club games for Tottenham Hotspur. Dan Dawson, a 16-year-old from Corby, England, had an eerie feeling when he saw the portrait on Mason’s right arm. Is that? Could it be? No….. There’s no way that portrait was of him, was it?

The similarities between the tattoo and Dawson’s 12-year-old face are simply uncanny. As you can see from the 30,000+ retweets the image quickly went viral. Much in the same way that most of us react when seeing something silly explode on the internet, Dawson was puzzled by his posts popularity. “I still don’t understand any of what’s going on right now,” Dawson tweeted.
Mason has not spoken publicly since Tuesday’s match to explain who the person in the tattoo portrait actually is. Like with most tattoo portraits we’re guessing that it is someone that holds a special place in the Tottenham footballer’s heart. And while it was fun to get a laugh out of the similarities between the tattoo and Dawson there was another side to that coin, a side that the perceptive 16-year-old was able to recognize.
“I kinda feel bad bc [sic] his tattoo is probably a tribute to a relative or a friend and now I come along with my 12 yr old ratty face and ruin it,” Dawson tweeted.
