L.A. based artist Al-Baseer Holly explores his love of cartoons in his first exhibit C.A.M. (Childhood Access Memories). Holly’s work mixes the naughty with the nostalgic as he uses women’s bottoms as a canvas for a number of his cartoon themed pieces. Being fans of the booty ourselves, we had to talk to the man behind the masterpieces.

Why did you make the move from Philly to LA?
I’ve lived a few different places since I left Philly, but the weather and beauty of LA drew me to it and kept me there.

Can you tell us a little bit about your music career?
I put an album out with my partner Mr.Man and our group was “Philly’s Most Wanted,” The Neptunes produced most of it and some people consider it to be a classic.

How has your music influenced your art and vice versa?
I was an artist first but the way I think my rap has influenced my art is [in my use of] metaphors; I use them a lot in my pieces and that’s from my rapping days.

Your artwork is strongly influenced by classic cartoons and children’s literature (Dr. Seuss), what drew you to this subject matter?
I’m really a big kid at heart and I think using cartoons attracts more eye balls because it’s a part of most of our lives on some level.

A lot of your artwork is painted on female’s butts, is there any particular reason for this?
I love painting, I love women, and I love a nice ass so why not put them all together?

Who are your models?
Some famous, some shy, some a lot of fun, but my rule is they remain anonymous unless they let people know themselves out of respect for the process.

C.A.M., Childhood Access Memories, is your first exhibit, how have people received your work?
The response has been really good I’m already working on my next show for London.

Which is your favorite piece?
My favorite is “Childhood Access Memories,” because Green Eggs and Ham was my favorite book as a child.

What are your plans for the future?
My plan is to keep going bigger keep, pushing, keep focus, and share my art with the world as a whole.

Artist, poet and rapper Al-Baseer Holly explores his love of cartoons through his first exhibit C.A.M. (Childhood Access Memories) showing at LA’s Known Gallery.
