From its birth in the 1920’s the goal of surrealism was to meld the worlds of reality and dream into one. Possibly the most effective way to do that is by altering what people consider to be the most important, and in some ways sacred, part of the body—the face. From the moment Magritte put an apple in front of that dapper gentleman with the bowler hat altering what would otherwise be an ordinary portrait has been a popular theme within surrealism. One hundred years later that same technique is being used in the tattoo realm by masters such as Pietro Sedda. In the gallery below you will find some of our favorite surreal portrait tattoos.
