While their garb may be nightmare inducing to some, plague doctors were hired during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to treat patients afflicted with the bubonic plague. Often times plague doctors were the second rate or aspiring doctors of the area. While we may find their look menacing that was not the intention; the doctors wore a long beak-like mask filled with aromatic perfumes meant to filter the contaminated air. Or at the very least, to cover the stench of death. As medical technology evolved, plague doctors and their signature costumes eventually went out of style but the iconic image remains a symbol of macabre folklore.
