Forged during the late 60s, metal began it's rise to music mainstream via genres such as acid rock and heavy blues. During the 80s, metal came into its own and by the time the 90s rolled around, the genre was in full swing. The 1990s defined metal as a genre, not only in commercial success but through the diversification of the movement itself. Today, many of the leading metal bands of the 90s still sell out stadiums around the world and established the standard for the post-metal era—giving rise to metal bands of the new millennium such as Deafheaven, Disturbed, and Linkin Park.
