Destin Sandlin, the creator of the YouTube channel Smarter Every Day, explores how a person gets inked in his most recent video. To learn about tattoos, Sandlin visited Timepiece Tattoo Company in Huntsville, Alabama and was shown the ins-and-outs of a tattoo machine by Leah Farrow.
After being given an explanation on the differences between rotary and coil tattoo machines, Sandlin sets up his super slow motion camera to watch how a tattoo is applied. One common misconception about tattoos is that the ink is delivered through the needles; Sandlin explains in the video that this is not the case and that the ink is actually delivered in between the needles that puncture the skin.
While Sandlin was a bit too squeamish to get his own tattoo he did have Leah briefly use the machine on him without ink. In the moment that she does it the look on Sandlin’s face indicates that he has gotten a taste of the rush that everyone who has been inked understands.
