“The worst advice I ever received from my dad was to play by the book.” –Dimebag Darrell

Here at INKED we see hundreds of amazing portrait tattoos and commemorative ink each week.  They can serve as beautiful reminders of loved ones and memorials to those who have influenced the wearers’ lives.  One of the more recent pieces we’ve come across has been the above portrait of the late, great Darrell Lance Abbott by realism extraordinaire Nikko Hurtado.

Better known as Dimebag Darrell, and also Diamond Darrell in his earlier years, Abbott has gone down in history as one of the greatest guitarists of all time.  A clear legend by both Rolling Stone and Billboard standards, Darrell is best known for his contributions as a founding member of the late ‘80s to early 2000s groove metal trailblazer, Pantera, and later 2004’s Damageplan after Pantera’s disbandment. Tragically, Abbott was shot and killed on stage during a live Damageplan performance on December 8, 2004.  He was 38 years old.

Though many remember Abbott for his incredible talent and contributions to the metal scene, he, himself, had his own idols. Abbott was very openly influenced by KISS, so much so that he had an image of guitarist Ace Frehley tattooed on his chest complete with the Space Ace autograph.  While looking back at all of the contributions Abbott brought to the music world, check out several more portrait tattoos Abbott’s fans have had inked to commemorate their own idol in the gallery below.
