No Payne, No Gain

Today’s tattoo of the day is this incredible full chest and stomach piece by Josh Payne.  Payne is an incredible illustrative tattoo artist whose talents have led him to be featured in numerous publications, including the cover of Freshly Inked.  Known for his large-scale pieces with bold colors and a Japanese influence, Payne has been paving the way for style innovation for years.

Today’s pick is a Payne classic. This epic battle between beak and bite rages on between this bird-like creature and one of Payne’s signature snakes.  The solid, bold black outlines and the diverse color palette really make this piece pop, but will also ensure that the tattoo upholds for years to come.  We love the use of the color orange in this piece as it makes its way throughout the majority of the client’s chest and torso, thus balancing out the piece and brightening it up from all of the darker background colors.  It’s color scheme decisions like these that have helped make Payne such an icon in the modern illustrative style.

Payne, now the owner of Ascend Gallery in Cortland, New York, didn’t always plan on being a tattoo artist, but once he found the medium at the age of 16, he fell in love and kept at it.  With all of this tremendous talent, we sure are glad that Payne stayed with the industry to bring about some of the mind blowing pieces that we have come across in the past few years.
