Today’s skull of the day is this impressive back piece by Jak Connolly. Connolly is a highly talented black and grey artist based in the United Kingdom. While his work is typically black and grey, it borders more on surrealism than the realistic styles usually associated with strictly black and grey artists.
One of the coolest things about Connolly is that he tattoos in black and grey, but typically paints in color. The gorgeous color paintings that he is known for sometimes get turned into amazing tattoos in which Connolly focuses more closely on his shading and lighting contrasts since the inked pieces lack colors.
With such a tremendous talent behind an easel, Connolly is great at rendering large-scale pieces, as seen with today’s pick. Take a close look at this back piece. To bring it to life Connolly combined elements of realism and fantasy to create the askew comparison between the face of the woman and the skull extending from her. The massive size of this piece paired with the immense amount of detail added to it perfectly showcases Connolly’s execution and design skills when it comes to tattooing.
Connolly’s shading sophistication really shines in this piece as it has moments of heavy solid jet black countered with beautiful fluid soft greys. We love the wispy smoke-like effect that swirls throughout the piece rounding the entire thing out.
