Should Kylie Jenner Have Pierced Her Baby’s Ears?

New mom, social media star, and billionaire Kylie Jenner is always in the spotlight, a price to pay for the massive makeup empire and social media following she has gained. As a new mother fans along with the press are constantly watching and monitoring her every move, post, and location check in. The latest criticism comes from the moms decision to pierce her infants ears. I found the piercing to be normal. I had my ears pierced by mother at one despite my fathers slight protest, due to the fact that everyone would come up to mother boasting about what a beautiful baby BOY I was. This led some strangers to comment on the fact that “I was too young to have my ears pierced.” Lets see what fans, and professionals think is a safe and reasonable age to pierce your Childs ears.

Should You Get a Tattoo While Pregnant? Here’s the Facts!

When a woman is pregnant people automatically feel obliged to give advice. It’s just a natural inclination, especially from women who have already gone through the beauty and pain of giving birth. Everyone wants the mother and child to be healthy and everyone has their opinion on how the mom-to-be can insure that’s exactly what happens. And we have to admit that most of the advice is probably pretty sound based on the fact that these tried and true moms have gone through it all already, some even multiple times.

However, when the advice is about whether a pregnant woman should get tattooed, well, there the experience factor drops and many women (and men) just start shooting from the hip and giving advice based on their sole opinion and hearsay.

So, if you are pregnant or know someone who is, or are just curious about the topic, here is some sound advice on what to do and what not.

If you do … it may lead to infection

A doctor’s main concern for their pregnant patient is infection and we know that not all tattoo shops are abide by the same strict standard rules of hygiene. And we’re talking blood borne infections here — staph, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.

These diseases are dangerous whether a woman is pregnant or not, but in this case contracting one of these conditions while carrying a child can easily lead to the infection being passed on to the unborn baby.

Ok, let’s say you decided to get inked. These are the symptoms to watch out for post tattoo. And if they occur see your doctor immediately.

  • fever
  • chills
  • pus or red lesions on the tattoo
  • foul smelling discharge from the area of the tattoo
  • areas of hard, raised tissue
  • new dark lines developing in or radiating around the area

If you do…it may double the pain

Thankfully the tramp stamp has gone out of vogue, however there are still woman who get work done on their lower backs. Well, this is exactly where an epidural is administered. Granted a tattoo only takes a few weeks to heal, so unless you had the work done within that time frame you could be looking for trouble. HOWEVER, what if you are outside the two week window, but the tattoo gets infected. Then you will have to pass on the epidural. Also, some epidural leave scar tissue which may impact the look of your tattoo.

So, if you are planning on getting thorough the pain of child birth by having an epidural you should wait to get inked there until after you have the baby.

If you do…it may look different after pregnancy

As you can well imagine a woman’s body goes through all kinds of hormonal changes and fluctuations while pregnant, and some of these affect the skin. The consensus is to avoid any tattoos on the stomach or hips, even months before giving birth because of a condition that commonly occurs striate gravid arum — better known as stretch marks!

However, there are a host of other skin conditions that can erupt during pregnancy that can make getting tattoo even more painful than usual and difficult for the artist to render. Some of them are:

Pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP): is a chronic hives like rash that strikes some women during pregnancy. Although extremely annoying for its sufferers (because of the itch), it presents no long-term risk for either the mother or unborn child. PUPPP frequently begins on the abdomen and spreads to the legs, feet, arms, chest, and neck

Prurigo of pregnancy: is a benign non-specific pruritic (itchy) papular rash that arises during pregnancy. This itchy rash is made up of small bumps called papules and it may last for several months after delivery.

Impetigo herpetiformis: Although rare this rare condition usually starts in the second half of pregnancy and is considered a form of psoriasis. In addition to the skin irritation it can cause nausea, vomiting, fever, and chills.

Hyperpigmentation caused by hormonal changes this condition causes the skin in certain areas of the body from her nipples to her face to darken. The technical term is Melasma but is also known as the “mask of pregnancy,”. This is a very common condition that is experienced by up to 70% of pregnant women.

If you do…how to do it safely

The practices employed in regard to looking for a safe shop to get tattooed should be used anytime someone is thinking of getting inked. Here’s what to look for:

  1. Find a tattoo artist who has single-use, “throw-away” kits that are individually packaged, dated, and sealed and hold disposable needles and tubes. Watch your tattoo artist remove the new needle and tube from its sealed envelope immediately before your session.
  2. Make sure that the tattoo parlor is fully licensed (if your state regulates tattoo parlors), and that your tattooist has a great deal of experience, even if that means driving across county lines to find a licensed shop.
  3. Make sure the artist wears sterile disposable gloves for each client and use sterile disposable towels, much as you’d expect from your dentist.
  4. Watch a procedure first to make sure that unsterile surfaces and equipment are not touched by the tattoo artist once the procedure has begun.
  5. Look for telltale signs of sloppy tattoo practices, such as blood splatter, dirty work surfaces, the absence of red “sharps disposal containers,” and a lack of infection-control practices.
  6. Ask where the ink was manufactured and procured. “It’s best if the ink comes from a large manufacturer that has been in business a long time, and even better if the artists have tried the ink on themselves,” says Byron Kennedy, M.D., deputy director of health for Monroe County, N.Y., and the lead author of the NEJM story. The contaminated ink in the recent outbreak came from a small retailer, he pointed out.
  7. Ask if the inks used are made of nonmetallic organic pigments.
  8. The studio should have a separate tattooing are and piercing area. If something doesn’t look right, or appear clean, say something.

If you are not showing that obviously, it doesn’t hurt to alert the artist that you are pregnant. And like anytime you are getting tattooed if you don’t feel comfortable with the shop or artist, just leave.

If at any time you feel unsure or uncomfortable, leave. After all, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

If you don’t…consider getting a henna tattoo

We are not big on getting fake or temporary tattoos, however henna or mehndi is neither of those. It is a beautiful and ancient art used for centuries in areas of South Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East and now there are many experienced women in the United States who can apply the art to your skin.

In fact, in some cultures a traditional henna celebration is performed on expectant mothers to ward off evil spirits.

Although the paste is generally made from safe ingredients, like henna powder, water, and sugar, there have been cases of women getting very ill as an allergic reaction to the ingredients.

So, should you, or shouldn’t you?

The answer is totally up to you. There are risks involved and you could wait till after your pregnancy to celebrate with some new ink, or you can do your due diligence and stack the odds in your favor that all will be alright.

The decision is yours, but we hoped these bits of information will help you make your decision.

We have to end this article with mentioning that we know VERY few artists who would tattoo a pregnant woman. They feel it just isn’t worth the risk

Vintage Wagner Tattoo Flash Discovered in Trunk! Paid $10 for Treasure!

The six sheets were found in the bottom of a trunk in an attic owned by an 84-year old career Marine Corps man. The trunk had been in storage for over forty years and held other collections including a 1584 hand-colored map engraving of Tuscany, which is also up for auction by Ripley Auctions.

Tony Gallick, an antique collector, found the trunk in a recent estate sale and shared, “While the man was over seas in the 1940’s, his wife kept busy by shopping yard and estate sales.  The house was covered floor to ceiling with boxes they moved from house to house as he was reassigned. She bought the trunk and it remained in storage for decades. I saw a trunk and thought it was pretty cool and paid $10 for it.”

When Gallick first saw the flash sheets, he knew they were rare.  “I didn’t know the artist, but I knew they were highly collectible.  I researched for about two months and the 1908 date on one design was my starting point.  There were only a handful of tattoo artists at the turn of the century.  The flash of ships and sailors lead me to research port cities.  That lead me to New York, the Bowery, then Charlie Wagner and Sam O’Reilly.  They were working together for a decade until Sam’s death in 1909.”  When Sam died in 1908, Charlie moved into his shop and their work was blended together.

Sam O’Reilly (1854-1909) learned tattooing in the Navy and patented the first tattooing machine in 1891. He practiced in New York City in the bowery. Charlie Wagner (1875-1953) was a tattoo artist for more than 50 years. He apprenticed with Samuel O’Reilly and patented his own tattoo machine in 1904. He sold tattoo machines and his brand of ink and tattooed circus performers, sailors and “tattooed ladies.”

Gallick has spoken to flash experts who note several aspects of the sheets that point to Wagner and O’Reilly.  The paper is the right size and material.  Charlie was one of the only artists of the day to use brown instead of black ink. The vibrantly colored tattoos were representative of his work. The subject matter dates back as far as 1894 including Buffalo Bill, Custer, the Spanish-American War, the image of crossed guns representative of Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, to name a few. One image includes the date 1908.

Gallick discovered an image of Jesus on one flash sheet that can be seen in a common photo of a boy Charlie tattooed over many years, beginning at age nine.  “He brought him in the shop located in the back of a barber shop and gave him free tattoos. This kid was an orphan and in 1906 he got a full body tattoo.  Charlie talked him into being the first electronically tattooed boy in America and helped him get a job in the circus.  On his chest is a tattoo of Jesus which can be seen on the flash sheet,” shared Gallick. “Charlie was one of the only artists tattooing children with images of sailors,” he added.

Caring for Tattooed Skin in the Summer!

$

The sun is both a blessing and a curse. Many people patiently and sometimes not so patiently trudge through winter all the while dreaming of that first spring day signaling the onset of summer and those glorious sun-drenched days at the beach, on a boat or lounging on a building roof top. Sun worshiping — we all heard of the benefits of the spending time soaking u the rays of the big red ball — it triggers the body’s production of vitamin D, lower’s high blood pressure and improves brain function.

[ad type="above-image-1"]

And yes, we also know of the harmful effects that the sun can have upon us, most notably skin cancer, cataracts, and severe sun burns. However, we up the ante of what can happen to you and your tattoo once summer gets here and you hit the beach or the black top for an afternoon of blazing glory. So, with that said we are going to run down how to keep your tattoos and the rest of your body safe from the harmful rays of the sun.

[ad type="above-image-1"]

First off you have to realize that your skin is actually the largest organ of your body and because of that you need to protect the entire “thang” from your head to your toes — whether you’re tattooed or not. But if you are tattooed what is one of the concerns that worry you most? Fading, right? Well, it’s fact of tattooed life, your tats are going to fade and you have three options. Let them fade. Get them reworked. Or keep the out of the sun. Now, keeping them out of the sun won’t stop the inevitable, but it will delay the fading process considerably.

[ad type="above-image-1"]

This is even more imperative when you have tattoos. Tattoos will naturally fade over time, but sun exposure and lax skincare can accelerate fading. As the owner of two tattoos, I want to protect my lifelong investment. Here are the best ways to keep your tattoos looking bold and bright.

[ad type="above-image-1"]

Let’s start with the most obvious. The simplest and the one that most people don’t do for two reasons. One, they want to show off their ink and/or two they just simply forget. We are talking about covering up your tattoos. Yes, wear a light weight long sleeved shirt or long shorts to keep those tattoos covered. Girls there are a host of “breathable” leggings out there that will keep you kind of cool even when it’s hot outside.

[ad type="above-image-1"]

Second on the agenda is something you should be doing in both the summer and winter and that’s using moisturizer. If your tattoo is fresh, make sure that you use a moisturizer that is fragrance free or one of the many great aftercare products out there today. If your tat is healed just make sure you use something, anything! Dry skin is a tattoo’s worst enemy.

[ad type="above-image-1"]

This next tip could be a life safer and not just for your tattoos, but for your entire body and general health. Stay hydrated. Loading up on fluids — and water will do just fine — is essential for staying healthy throughout the year. The increase in fluid intake in the summer is only because of the potential of excess sweating, but many times in the winter, when you are bundled up or participating in a winter sports you can lose just as much fluid as a day at the beach.

In addition to the general health benefits staying hydrated keeps your skin clear and moisturized from the inside out. Combined with using lotion, your tattoos will look more vibrant.

[ad type="above-image-1"]

All suntan lotions and SPF’s are not created equal. Read the bottles and pay attention to the application directions. Reapply no longer than what it says, and there are very few lotions that are water proof. You go into the pool or surf, not only are you vulnerable to the sun when you come out, but odds are while you are in the water the protective properties of that suntan lotion are all but gone. So, when you come back to land reapply!

[ad type="above-image-1"]

I don’t believe we are writing this, but if you are one of those people that just absolutely must look bronzed in the summer, then we suggest you use a tinted moisturizer or better yet seek the services of a professional and get yourself spray tanned at a salon. It’s not our bag, but we understand if it’s yours.

[ad type="above-image-1"]

Believe it or not, but there are foods that actually help fight UV damage. There are a host of vegetables that contain vitamins and organic compounds that help rebuild damaged skin. Bell peppers, tomatoes, and carrots that contain these vitamins and compounds. Also, if you can get your hands “and mouth” on water-heavy foods like cucumber and watermelon it can be a delicious way to stay hydrated. Remember, a healthy, moisturized skin makes for the best looking tattoos.

[ad type="above-image-1"]

Ironically staying out of water is one rule you must abide by when you have fresh ink. That means no ocean, sea, pool and absolutely no hot tub action! We’re talking a good two to three weeks before you let that sucker get submerged and exposed to all the nasty little things that are found in bodies of water. In addition to the bacteria that may be in there, the chemicals used to help keep the water free of diseases can also wreak havoc on your new tattoo.

Look there are plenty of ways to enjoy the summer in a heavily tattooed body. Just make sure you follow some of these tips and you can have as much fun in the sun as, well, someone who is not tattooed! Gotta go, surf’s up!

Tattoo Pain. Why Do Tattoos Hurt So Much? Science has the answer.

$

Did that hurt? Anyone who has tattoos has been posed this question countless times. And ninety-nine times out of a hundred if the person is honest will answer something like, “Hell yeah!” And even though it is pretty much unanimous that every tattoo collector will agree that the process of getting tattooed hurts, they are not really sure why…other than it involves needles. The other question regarding pain and tattoos is more of a “in house joke” among tattoo collectors and that is “What part of the body hurts most to get tattooed.” That’s when the “war stories” begin to fly out and the shirts go flying off to reveal tattoos on various body parts, usually with commentary that involves phrases like, “hurt like a bastard”, “this was the worst” and “I almost bailed midway”. Again, despite the overwhelming agreement that getting tattooed on certain body parts “hurts like a bastard” the reasons why are not that clear. So, let’s see if we can have history and science enlighten us.

First a little interesting history on the art of primal marking.

The accepted but still debated origin of the word tattoo is believed to be derived from the Polynesian word “tatau” which means “to mark”. Sounds logical, but no one is really sure and since tattooing has been around long before the Polynesian culture, many believe its etymology stems much further back. For instance, Otzi (the ice man) who was found in the Swiss Alps in 1991, and lived between 3400BC and 3100BC had tattoos. His 61 markings although just dots were ink tattoos and believed to have had some medicinal significance, since 85% of them line up with known acupuncture points and Otzi’s bones due reveal he had arthritis. According to Dr. Lars Kurtak, a world-renowned tattoo expert and anthropologist with the Repatriation Office of the National Museum of Natural History, “He appeared to have terrible arthritis. [The tattoos were] so dark, they seemed to be repeated applications and some of them he could not reach on his own,” he notes.

For some past and present cultures, the ability to successfully endure extreme amounts of pain is a rite of passage from childhood to adulthood or as a way to show a commitment to a society or gang. In primitive cultures, it is not only the ability to endure excruciating pain at the hands of the tattoo tools, but also survive the blood loss from these unsophisticated methods of getting inked.

Early tattooing was done by cutting the skin and actually rubbing the ink into the open wound or using hand fashioned needles made of bone, wood or metal (usually rusty) to push ink into the skin. The first recorded encounter of a Westerner witnessing the art of tattooing dates from around 1769 when the naturalist Joseph Banks who was traveling aboard the British sponsored ship Endeavor witnessed the “extensive adorning” of a 12-year-old girl. “It was done with a large instrument about 2 inches long containing about 30 teeth,” Banks wrote in his journal. “Every stroke […] drew blood.” Banks went on to say that the girl was wailing, struggling and writhed but two female “associates” held her down, occasionally actually beating her, for more than an hour until the tattoo was completed.

There are many ancient practices that still survive today for many cultures, for instance: in New Guinea, the circular tattoos on a Tofi woman’s face denote her family lineage, Cambodian monks display their religious devotion by the characters etched in ink on their chests, the Maori people of New Zealand tattoo their bodies and faces with intricate tribal tattoos to show tribal affiliations, the Japanese Yakuza’s practice the illegal act of getting tattooed to show gang affiliation, rank and to show off their criminal activity.

Okay, now that we have our brief history on the origins of tattooing let’s flash forward to the modern method of tattooing. Okay, the reason tattoos don’t disappear after your tattoo has healed is because the ink is not being held by skin cells, but rather by immune cells called macrophages. These particular white blood cells exist to gobble up foreign and cellular debris, and they come rushing whenever you’re wounded. So, while you are getting tattooed your body thinks it is being attacked and these macrophages race to the scene, latch on to these ink saturated cells and hold them in place for years to come. New research has discovered that those original don’t last forever, so according to a study published Tuesday in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, tattoos can persist after those initial macrophages die because when the immune cells wither, they leave behind ink among your skin cells—just as it was when you first got your tattoo. Lo and behold, the new study suggests, new macrophages rush into the fray to pick up the mantles of their fallen brethren.

Modern tattooing uses two types of machines, the traditional coil machine that still works on the basic principles when it was first invented back in 1876 and the more modern rotary machine — coil is definitely the more painful instrument of the two. We will explain why in an upcoming article.

In its most basic explanation the tattooing process works like this. Using an electric tattoo machine with one-to-multiple needles moving in a piston-like movement simultaneously at a speed of 80 to 3000 punctures per minute, with the needles inserting a tiny amount of ink into your skin with every needle strike. As mentioned earlier some of the ink does not “stick”, but most stay’s in place and macrophages latch on and fixed skin cells named fibroblasts remain visible through the thin layers of skin.

Okay, now this is why getting tattooed hurts so much. We have all gotten a bad scratch on our arm or even a paper cut and despite that fact it hurts — ouch! It doesn’t hurt like — Holy crap! Why? Well, there are a few reasons. Many people don’t realize this but the skin is the largest organ of the body, serving as the soft outer layer of protection to protect fragile organs that resides inside our body cavity. The two major parts that make up our skin is the epidermis (this is the outer layer of dead keratinocytes that “flakes” off of to be renewed pretty often) together with the more stable dermis (the layer under it that houses all kinds of glands, hair follicles, blood vessels, lymph vessels and sensory cells) forms the cutis. Directly under the cutis lies the subcutis or subcutaneous tissue, where fatty cells reside and act to protect us from the cold.

So, in addition to the tattoo process involving needles, the act of getting tattooed is so painful because of where the ink needs to reside — deep enough to stay put and still be visible through the remaining layers of skin. Unfortunately, this layer of skin just happens to be right next to your skin’s pain receptors which are responsible for sending those messages back to the brain. Now take into consideration that when getting tattooed the skin is being “attacked” anywhere from 50 to 3000 times per minute causing those receptors to shift into panic mode and send a flurry of pain signals back to the brain! Therefore, the brain begins to register a level of pain that is pretty damn intense.

So, the next time someone asks you, “Hey, did that hurt?” now you can tell them yes it did and why!

As a writer, editor, journalist or whatever you want to call me, words hold a great deal of importance. I know, that sounds incredibly nerdy but I have the right to geek out on my own terms. You see, words and language have been used since the beginning of animal history as a means of communicating everything from basic needs to radical ideas. Words have come in and out of fashion—and our definition for those words have changed with cultural exchange and growth. As someone who is a professional communicator, I believe very strongly that words have a power that is greater than most people recognize and that everyone needs to take the time to recognize how language can have lasting effects on people for generations to come. Not sure what I'm monologuing about? Well, I want you to consider this phrase: All Tattoos are Temporary. Yes that's right, you're hearing this from INKED magazine of all places. But before you sound off on your keyboards and say I'm crazy, take a look at my argument in the gallery below and allow my perspective to infiltrate your consciousness for just a short moment.

Veronica Carol Blades and Adam Curlykale are not your ordinary inked couple of friends, they are the exact opposite. Blades, also known as MissXRoniX, is a transgender body modification enthusiast originally from Poland who now works as a piercer in London, UK. As a transgender, Blades was already different when she was a teen and embraced her uniqueness by getting a few more piercings, crazy hairstyles and eventually body modifications to differ herself from the stuck-up little Polish town she’s originally from. She found her way to London to complete her journey as a “beyond gender” body mods model and therefore sets a whole new level of acceptance. She just removed two of ribs. Her friend Adam Curlykale, a Russian body modification lover just broke the internet by announcing he went under a nullification procedure, meaning he removed his nipples and genitalia, and is now a “nullo.” Which doesn’t make him the first guy who has done this, but the first one who’s 90% covered in tattoos.
