In 2015, model and activist Tess Holliday made international headlines after becoming the first model of her height and size to be signed to a major modeling agency. Born Ryann Hover, Holiday grew up in small-town Mississippi and spent her childhood being bullied for her size. Holliday’s harassment was so bad that at the age of 17, she left high school and completed her degree online. Not only was Holliday bullied by her peers at school, she also notes that was verbally harassed by her father growing up.
However, Holliday did have the support of her mother, who encouraged her daughter to pursue modeling. At 15, Holliday first attempted to enter the modeling industry by applying for a plus-sized modeling competition in Atlanta but was turned down because of her size and short stature. In 2010, Holliday decided to leave her small town life behind to pursue modeling in Los Angeles and went on to work for international clients such as Torrid, Benefit Cosmetics and Vogue Italia. By 2014, Holliday committed to modeling full-time and less than a year later, she was signed to London’s Milk Model Management. Shortly after signing to Milk, Holliday went viral and went on to be featured on the cover of People Magazine.
Since solidifying herself as a public figure, Holliday continued to break down barriers and covered magazines such as Cosmopolitan UK, Self, and Fabulous.
